Power Maxed Racing enter two Volkswagen Polo Rs into the Volkswagen Racing Cup and VAG Trophy

BTCC team Power Maxed Racing (PMR) are proud to announce that they will be entering two WRC inspired Volkswagen Polo Rs into the 2016 Miltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup and 2016 Maximum Group VAG Trophy. The Volkswagen Racing Cup cars will be piloted by Scotsman Stefan Di Resta and Essex racer Bobby Thompson with the cars being driven in the VAG Trophy by championship debutants Stephen Johansen and Russell Joyce.

The Polo Rs are the first cars built entirely by the Warwickshire based PMR outfit. From concept to delivery they have been designed as an out and out race car, developed with the same diligence and precision as the team’s British Touring Cars. The Polo Rs will be powered by Volkswagen 2 litre turbocharged TFSI engines. The engineering side of the project has been spearheaded by PMR’s Martin Broadhurst who has utilised his 20 years top level motorsport experience with Prodrive, Mitsubishi RallyArt and multiple manufacturer BTCC projects with Triple 8.

Stefan Di Resta is no stranger to the Volkswagen Racing Cup having competed in the championship in 2014 scoring 2 race wins, 4 podiums, 3 fastest laps and placing 3rd in the championship. The Scot is also the brother of former Formula 1 and DTM star Paul Di Resta. Bobby Thompson was a new entry to the Volkswagen Racing Cup in 2015 and took the series by storm with 1 race win, 3 podiums, 2 fastest laps and a pole position. Bobby has a long karting career behind him as well as a successful stint in Formula Ford.

In the VAG Trophy, Stephen Johansen is a stalwart of the single make FunCup having competed in the championship for the last 8 seasons. He is also a Grade A ARDS instructor and company director of IT and AV company Indigo Technology Services. Russell Joyce is taking his first steps in racing after an extensive passion for track days. He has been involved in Motorsport for a number of years as Managing Director of hugely successful and renowned vehicle graphics company Joyce Design.

Adam Weaver, Power Maxed Racing Team Principal commented, “It’s a proud day to announce the first of many PMR built cars, we poured a lot of time and effort to make sure they’re perfect. We have assembled a very strong driver line-up and want to make our mark in the Volkswagen based championships this year. It’s important that we can offer our drivers progression from entry level motorsport right the way through to our BTCC programme.”

Weaver continues, “We’re also developing two more Polos, cars 3 and 4, that we will have ready for the first round of the Volkswagen Cup in April, we are in talks with a few very interested drivers who are keen to be in what will be the strongest car on the grid. Interested parties should contact me quickly to secure a drive.”

Stuart Lines, Volkswagen Championships Co-Owner commented, “We’re really excited to have Power Maxed Racing on board, a team of their calibre adds so much value to the championship and their professional approach will raise the bar for every competitor.” He continues, “Plus the fact they are bringing a new Volkswagen model to the championships along with a top driver lineup is really exciting news. We can’t wait to see the cars on the grid in the first round.”

The cars will make their debut and be seen for the first time on Easter Monday in the opening round of the VAG Trophy at Oulton Park.
