Sir Chris Hoy joins LMP3 Cup as celebrity driver

28th June 2017

The LMP3 Cup Championship has announced Olympic legend Sir Chris Hoy will compete in the series’ final two races of the season.

The six-time Olympic cycling gold medal winning will drive a third United Autosports run Ligier JS P3 alongside the yet-to-be-announced winner of the Young Driver Initiative.

Hoy has most recently competed in a Caterham with the BRSCC but has also contested the British GT Championship with Nissan in 2014. In 2016 he competed in the LMP2 class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Algarve Pro Racing, finishing 12th in class.

He does have LMP3 experience having previously raced the class in the European Le Mans series in 2015.

A public vote is set to decide Hoy’s teammate out of the ten finalists.

“I’m really excited to be racing for United Autosports in the final round of the Henderson Insurance Brokers LMP3 Cup Championship at Donington Park,” said Hoy, who is set to undertake a testing programme prior to his series debut.

“To be sharing the drive with an aspiring young champion of the future will make it even more special I’m sure,” said Hoy, who is set to undertake a testing programme prior to his series debut.”

“We were hoping the celebrity half of the line-up would be someone with some racing experience,” said United Autosports Managing Director Richard Dean.

“In Chris we have found just that. He has raced LMP3 cars before and is quick, so placing him with a young talent is perfect for this initiative. I’m excited to see who wins the Young Driver contest and to see whom Chris will be racing alongside.

“I’m really pleased Chris has agreed to join us for the final round.”
